Two popular brands that produce bike components are SRAM and Shimano. Both company focuses on offering reliable and high performance bike products, but which one is better? This article will give you some background information about these two companies.


The SRAM company was founded in 1987 and is based in Chicago, Illinois. The name of the company came from the founders, Scott, Ray, and Sam. The company started by introducing Grip Shift technology to road bikes. Today, SRAM produces all range of bike components and even full sets. In 2010, their sales reached over $525.2 million.


Shimano produces more than just bike components, they also produce fishing, and rowing gear. The company is based in Sakai, Japan with manufacturing plants in China, Malaysia, and Singapore. 75% of their net sales are from bicycle components and takes 50% of the global bicycle component market. Shimano reached net sales of $1.4 billion in 2005.
